The Science of Incremental Change: Small Actions = Big Results

2025 is for little steps and BIG growth

When it comes to making life changes, it’s easy to think that success requires a dramatic overhaul. We set huge intentions and aspiring goals, but often find ourselves running out of steam and wondering why everything isn't clicking. A few weeks later, we have given up and moved on. What can we do to prevent this new year resolution burnout?

Research shows that lasting change comes not from grand gestures, but from small, consistent actions. Incremental change—the act of making tiny adjustments every day—has the power to transform your life over time.

Here’s why small steps matter and how you can start building habits that lead to big results.

The Science Behind Small Changes

Incremental change is rooted in the concept of behavioral momentum, a term used in psychology to describe how small successes build motivation and make larger goals achievable. A key study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (Lally et al., 2010) found that, on average, it takes 66 days to form a new habit. The simpler the action, the easier it is to repeat, paving the way for long-term success.

Another powerful example is the 1% Rule, popularized by James Clear in his book Atomic Habits. Clear explains that if you improve by just 1% each day, those small improvements compound over time, leading to a remarkable 37% improvement by the end of the year. This principle applies to everything from fitness to finance, relationships, and personal growth.

Why Small Steps Work

  1. They’re Less Overwhelming: Big goals can feel intimidating. Breaking them down into small, manageable steps makes them less daunting.

  2. They Build Confidence:Each small success reinforces your ability to stick with a habit, creating positive momentum.

  3. They Create Sustainable Change: Small actions are easier to maintain over time, making them more effective than drastic, short-lived efforts.

  4. They Reduce the Risk of Burnout: Overstretching yourself often leads to exhaustion and giving up. Incremental progress keeps you energized and motivated.

Examples of Small Actions Leading to Big Results

  1. Want to Be More Active?

    • Start by parking further away from the entrance, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or don't park beside your mailbox to check your mail, and make yourself walk up the drive instead.

    • Add just five minutes of movement to your daily routine and gradually build from there.

  2. Want to Eat Healthier?

    • Swap one sugary drink for water each day.

    • Add one extra serving of vegetables to your lunch or dinner.

  3. Want to Reduce Stress?

    • Begin with two minutes of deep breathing before bed.

    • Dedicate just five minutes a day to silencing your phone and do some journaling or gratitude practice.

Compound Interest in Action

Think of incremental change like compound interest in a bank account. Just as small, regular deposits grow into substantial savings over time, small daily actions build up to create significant changes in your health, mindset, and overall life satisfaction. A penny saved is a penny earned.

For instance, if you attend one yoga class a week, that’s 52 classes in a year! Each session helps improve your flexibility, strength, and mental clarity—a compounding effect that adds up to noticeable transformation down the road.

How to Get Started

  1. Set Tiny, Specific Goals: Instead of saying, “I’ll get in shape,” commit to doing 10 minutes of yoga or walking daily.

  2. Anchor Habits to Existing Routines: Pair a new habit with something you already do, like stretching while your coffee brews.

  3. Track Your Progress: Use a journal, app, or simple checklist to keep track of your daily actions and celebrate small wins.

  4. Be Patient: Remember that real change takes time. Focus on consistency, not perfection.
